Sustainable smart aquaponic farming solutions with Kijani Grows

Kijani means "green" in Swahili. Kijani Grows is an organization that uses "traditional concepts, local materials and modern technologies" (@faircompaniesto create sustainable, efficient and innovative farming techniques in both urban and rural environments.

It’s called aquaponics- a gardening system that combines hydroponics (water-based planting) and aquaculture (fish farming). It is also smart farming, meaning that by using water sensors and other technologies you can monitor and, in turn, control your pH, teprature and water levels using social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

Kijani Grows (
@kijanigrows), started by Eric Maundu, creates and installs smart aquaponics farming systems for schools, homes and corporate settings. If you check out the blog, you can learn more about "how tobuild a smart aquaponics garden: (101)" yourself.

An Illustrative example of one of Maundu's designs.

You can also order materials, donate and see where Kijani Grows are making progress in different settings on the website. By outsourcing the organization's techniques, Kijani Grows is currently undertaking a construction project in Guatemala.
